Poetically named 'Eheu Hale’, translating to "Wing House" in Hawaiian, this residence graces the eastern slopes of the West Maui Mountains, overlooking the Kahului valley with a panoramic view that unfolds from the covered lanai.  Embracing the local language and culture, the award-winning "Wing House" embodies the Hawaiian dichotomy of Mauka (towards the mountain) and Makai (towards the sea). The site itself mirrors this contrast, basking in the morning sun over Kahului Harbor while sheltered against the green ridges and ravines of Iao Valley, shielded from the afternoon winds off Mauna Kahalawai.

Drawing inspiration from two rich Maui cultures, the design seamlessly weaves together elements of Japanese vernacular architecture with hipped gable roofs and ancient Hawaiian building practices evident in steep gables and exposed beams. This cultural fusion manifests in a dynamic tension throughout the site, intertwining earth and air, refuge and opening, stone and glass, shelter and exposure, weight and lightness. "Wing House" invites occupants to experience a harmonious dialogue between the open air of the valley and the lush green expanse of the mountain, seamlessly blending modern living with the rich tapestry of Maui's cultural and natural heritage.
